Gold Nugget Guide
What is a natural gold nugget?
A natural gold nugget is a piece of gold that separated from quartz deposits in the earth
through erosion. Also known as placer gold, each nugget forms naturally and is completely unique.
Where are gold nuggets found?
They are discovered in rivers, streams, ancient river channels, and underground riverbeds
where erosion has occurred.
How pure are natural nuggets?
Gold nuggets typically range from 65% to 95% fine gold (approximately 16–23 karat) and may
contain trace minerals such as silver or copper.
What sizes do they come in?
Smaller pieces range from 1mm to 6mm and are often called flakes. Larger pieces are
referred to as nuggets. Historically, very large nuggets have been discovered,
though most larger specimens were melted down.
How are natural gold nuggets found?
Nuggets are recovered using gold pans, suction dredges, metal detectors, or
larger equipment that separates gold from surrounding soil and gravel.
How are nuggets weighed?
Gold nuggets are measured in troy ounces (31.1 grams per ounce). One troy ounce
equals 20 pennyweight (DWT). Larger nuggets are significantly rarer and more valuable.
Why do some nuggets look bright while others appear dull?
Because nuggets form in quartz deposits and travel through rivers, their surfaces
develop natural texture. Cleaning and tumbling processes can enhance their shine
while preserving authenticity.
The 14K gold nugget Seiko watch is more than a timepiece—it is a combination
of natural history and dependable watch engineering.
